Working conditions in diamond mines are often inhumane, with some miners earning wages as low as $1 a day in often dangerous conditions. Lab-grown diamonds are chemically identical in composition to earth mined diamonds. They offer the same durability, refraction, and color/clarity range as an earth mined diamond. Lab-grown diamonds typically show very few inclusions compared to the average mined diamond, due to the benefits of being grown in a controlled, constant environment. Without specialized equipment, it is impossible to definitively tell the difference between an earth mined diamond and a lab-grown diamond.
